The line remained quiet while I paced my living quarters. It was taking longer than I thought it would to reach Turshkin, and I’d promised Layla I would not leave her alone tonight. She needed support now more than ever, and it hurt me to leave her with her thoughts for so long.

“Hello?” Naluba Turshkin’s voice rang out. “Mezda Lerd, are you there?”

“I am. I am sorry to disturb you at such a late hour.”

“Think nothing of it, I was awake anyway.” Muffled sounds from the other side of the line hinted he was removing himself to a quieter place. “What is this about? Is Sorg Aves alright? Did something happen?”

I swallowed, centering my thoughts. “You asked to be notified of any bullying the last we spoke. It has come to my attention that Layla had indeed been targeted by someone while at school.” I paused, trying to keep my voice even while the rage within me continued to boil. “Sorg Alexzee Vandrows has been behind the ongoing hazing on Selucia and has continued his terror here on New Temorshia.”

Turshkin swore under his breath. “What will you do about it?”

My insides twisted. Layla had asked to do nothing until Vandrows slipped up again. This would allow our own misstep to go unnoticed. If we pushed him now, he could begin to spread rumors about us if he had not already. I had to tell Turshkin the truth, yet avoid anything about Layla and me.

“Lerd?” he asked. “Is Layla being protected while she is under your care?”

“Yes, without a doubt,” I said. “She has asked me to do nothing about it, but I do not agree with that sentiment. He will be dealt with and swiftly.”

“Glad to hear it,” Turshkin said. “Anything else?

“Though Vandrows remains a problem, he is not the biggest treat to Sorg Aves’s welfare and safety.”

“I am with Kayin now. She believes Layla is safe, as do I. Is that no longer the case?”

“Sorg Aves is safe, try not to worry,” I told him honestly, wondering if I was being too informal. “I am in the process of bringing in a Master Guardsmon for her. It took us a moment since we did not want to send the wrong message to the Temorshians by bringing in an obvious choice. I selected Avenida Hannel, who should be here by the end of the week.”

“I know her. Good decision,” Turshkin said, his voice revealing nothing. “I have read the recent reports about relations between Selucia and Temorshia. If you are bringing on another covert member to the team, I am going to assume there has been another threat made by the rebel forces we put down not too long ago?”

“You are correct. There is new intelligence suggesting they are getting ready to strike again. It could be here on New Temorshia or at the Galactic Court. Unfortunately, the intelligence is unclear.” I waited for him to say more—after all, he would have access to more information—but when he did
